NGG Spring Meeting 2023: Study of Religion and Social Media

The relentless growth of the Internet provides unprecedented opportunities to study global secular
and religious dynamics. The 2020s start, for the first time, with half of the planet’s population
connected to the World Wide Web, while new technologies and applications allow researchers to
produce scholarship deemed impossible only a few years ago. Given these developments’ impact on
societies and on religions, the study of religions is faced with untold opportunities but also
challenges.

In this spring meeting, we explore how innovative digital methods and special attention to digital
phenomena can reveal current societal transformations and pave the way to a new understanding of
the global secular-religion nexus beyond the quantitative-qualitative divide.
Particular emphasis is placed on methodological challenges. How can harvesting, scraping, and
visualizing datasets be made productive in the study of religion? What role will digital ethnography
or automated network analysis play in the study of religion?

The spring meeting will consists of a keynote of Giulia Evolvi on the state of the art of digital
ethnography, a series of presentations by participants in the NOSTER grand course ‘Using Tools to
Study Social Media and Religion’ and a plenary discussion.
